Community Mediation Service Corps (CMSC) AmeriCorps
Our Mission
To build the capacity of Community Dispute Resolution Centers to provide and expand high-quality alternative dispute resolution services. We are committed to supporting the next generation of diverse community-based ADR practitioners in New York State by providing pathway development for young people to enter this field.
The Community Mediation Service Corps (CMSC) is a program of the New York State Dispute Resolution Association (NYSDRA), with funding made possible by AmeriCorps State and National. CMSC partners with Community Dispute Resolution Centers (CDRCs) to help cultivate the next generation of community-based dispute resolution practitioners through extensive training, mentoring, and direct service opportunities.
During each service year (typically September through August), CMSC Members are placed with CDRC Host Sites across New York State. Each Member coordinates with their Host Site to meet the unique needs of the local community where they are placed, but all members serve in one of the following roles:
I. Youth Services Conflict Resolution Specialist
II. Capacity Building Specialist
III. Family Services Specialist (incl. Custody/Visitation)
CMSC provides extensive trainings to each service year cohort to equip Members with the tools and skills to become talented ADR practitioners. Trainings include: Restorative Circles, Basic Mediation, Conflict Coaching, and Custody & Visitation Mediation.
